Information Technology

I can't deny that I'm adicted to IT. Ever since I first played seriously with computers I found parts of IT where I could spend hours and nights.

Once this paragraph was filled with the most important hard- and software I had dealt with. But re-visting after only a few years I realized that times are changing faster than I imagined. What was new and hip and shiny now is yesterdays cold ash. So I won't got into stories of before the war when we had nothing and made all of it. My resume lists part of what I dealt with. Personally I also tinker with (and will probably continue to do so) microcontrollers (from pimping my coffee machine over the tumble dryer to my self-build 3D printer) lots of *NIX systems (at time of writing this page is hosted on a Debian). I did not make the journey back to mainframes where I started during univerity, but who knows what the future will bring.

RC Controlled Models

When time permits I tinker with radio controlled models. I have a couple of flying wings, deltas (including a Fun Jet which once nearly razored my forefinger), a 1.5m trainer (which has never been airborne due to many reasons) a boat and a car. Lately I tried flying helis. My first one was a Blade 400 which went up 10 meters very fast. Right then it went down the same speed. Let it be ten seconds flight time - followed by several hours on the bench. That made me think of training with Aerofly Professional which indeed helped me a lot. Now I additionally have an Align 250, a coax and a fixed pitch heli which did not really fly well, but the other helis meanwhile have a flight to repair ratio of about one. Also I have my 2nd quad copter - the first dropped in a vast grass field and was never found again.

Music

Once upon a time I played classical guitar quite well but I ruined my left hand with an accident. However, I still enjoy listening to music. My Linux home server hosts several hundred CDs with mostly classical and jazz (but Spotify has more, as I found out). It's hard to name my favorites, but Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Gershwin are amongst my favorite composers (ok, Shostakovich, Mahler, Glass and many others too). My favorite interprets are Glenn Gould, Charlie Parker, Lionel Hampton and Oscar Peterson (and ....). During my time in Munich I often had been in the philharmonic where I had the pleasure to listen to some of the above named.

Shotokan Karate

Since I had a sports accident in my early youth I never practised any sports again until around my 44th birthday where we moved to the Berlin area. My eldest son found a friend that went to the local Shotokan club. Somehow I had to join both and funny enough, I stayed tuned because it was fun. That's now 22 years ago and I just made my black belt (1st Dan), now at another dojo: Inazuma where I moved 8 years ago.
